MusicMaster and M3/Merge Music Media Announce New Strategic Partnership

As part of the development of the all-new MusicMaster ProTeam, we're pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Kristopher Jones and his company M3/Merge Music Media, the industry's leading custom music programming and music scheduling company.

MusicMaster CEO Laurie Knapp commented, "M3 and MusicMaster share a mutal interest in super-serving our clients. By collaborating with valued partners like Kristopher Jones, we can address the bigger picture in the radio station and maximize the benefits of both our services."

Kristopher Jones founded M3 in October 2015. The former VP of Programming and Music Scheduling Operations for Westwood One spent over 20 years leading the Custom Music Programming divisions for Westwood One, Dial Global, Jones Radio Networks and Broadcast Programming.

“Programming and scheduling music for networks, large and small groups and a myriad of individual radio stations requires robust, and customizable music scheduling software,” Jones said. “MusicMaster gives me the flexible tools I need to create great programming in any scenario. The MusicMaster team and I have built a long history of collaboration, development and trust. This partnership is the natural evolution; combining the best of what we do for those in radio who correctly insist that ‘my market is different!’ Great radio stations are tuned for their market and that's exactly what MusicMaster and M3 will do together… helping radio stay live, local and sound great.”

M3 provides expert music programming and music scheduling for radio stations and groups who want to improve their sound and take aim at their competition. Music accounts for about 80% of what your listeners hear. It’s a critical piece of your radio station’s success that often doesn’t get the time or expert attention that it deserves in a busy operation.

Radio stations that aren’t tethered to network McFormats or the consolidated programming of the big groups have a tremendous competitive advantage; they can be nimble and truly tailor their programming to their unique market.

MusicMaster + M3 will save you time and will pay for itself by improving the sound of your radio station. In radio today it’s all about investing in the tools and resources necessary to create great programming.

In the months ahead, Kristopher Jones will be shining a light on some of our valued partners and their “Successful Keeping it Local Stories” (S.K.I.L.S.). Read S.K.I.L.S. episode one below…

Episode 1: Matt Wilson - KSRM Radio Group
by Kristopher Jones

S.K.I.L.S. is about shining a light on the people who believe in the power of local radio and their success stories. We can all learn from each other…

Matt Wilson, the General Manager of the KSRM Radio Group, is a client of both MusicMaster and M3. Like most folks in radio he wears many hats. Besides being the GM, he's the Sales Manager, programs the country station, voice tracks two shifts and hosts a daily news talk show. Sometimes he answers the phone at the front desk too. Sound familiar?

The KSRM Radio Group is on the Kenai Peninsula, 140 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. Their six stations serve an audience of about 50,000 people.

Kristopher Jones: What did you find when you took over the KSRM Radio Group and what changes did you make?

Matt Wilson: “When I arrived in 2003 all the stations were almost completely satellite based with very little local content. I took on the country station first. We unplugged the satellite and brought the programming in-house with MusicMaster and programming help from Kristopher Jones. Within one ratings period we doubled our competitor and by the next ratings period we had tripled the competition. We hired part time jocks to voice track and put on a live morning show. We have low overhead and large market programming. I found that for the price of a basic satellite format I could easily program the station, be live and local and have success.”

Kristopher Jones: You believed in the value of serving your local community and were determined to find a way to make it work.

Matt Wilson: “Yes, over the next few years we brought the Hot AC and Rock stations local. But running six stations I didn’t have enough time so I hired Kristopher Jones to do the music programming and scheduling for them. Once again, we doubled the ratings and the stations continue to be top producers in the market. Recently, we launched a new Classic Hits station and expect the same results.”

Kristopher Jones: So you chose tools and resources that allowed to take control of your stations to create great local programming?

Matt Wilson: “Exactly. MusicMaster is a key part of our station. The robust interface provides our stations with quality music scheduling and the flexibility to customize each hour or day. Partnering with M3 frees up my time. Kristopher Jones is virtually a member of our programming team. Our music programming is designed around our clocks and our market. With M3 I know that all the music on our stations is on target and through our conversations I’ve become a better music programmer and scheduler.”

Kristopher Jones: More stories like yours are out there…

Matt Wilson: “Being live and local is what keeps our stations relevant and successful. We increased the station revenues and public perception by taking our stations local. The community is invested in their radio stations. Don’t fall in the trap of a simple plug and play radio station. The tools are at your fingertips to be successful, you just have to reach out and grab them. That is why we continue our partnership with M3 and MusicMaster.”

  Product Updates

Upgrade - Client-Server 2.1 Now Available

The latest version (2.1) of MusicMaster Client-Server (CS) has been released with many new updates and feature enhancements, including:

  • We have improved the overall handling when multiple users are using the program to better display changes made by other users.
  • There is a new rule in the Rule tree for Min/Max Quota Per Day, useful for hitting targets for attributes based upon song count, percent of song count, total runtime or percent of runtime.
  • Instant Analysis in the Schedule Editor has also been updated to accommodate the longer time period that the Min/Max Quota Per Day covers.
  • Library Synchronization has been updated to support encoding on the data import as well as supporting the import of files with delimiters in the field names.
  • You can now create an abbreviation for the station name so when you are working in the Enterprise Library, you can condense the width of the station checkbox fields and still know which station you are looking at.
  • On the more technical side, the XML file outputting has been improved in the Export Designer and all import/export functions can use any available Windows file encoding.
  • We've also added better support for running the CS Service as a specific user
For more information on these updates or to explore Client-Server further, please contact your MSC or visit our Support Center.

Hide Blank Rows in Turnover

In Turnover, the bottom graph shows you the projected turnover of the category. For categories that spin more slowly, it might be hard to see the pattern due to seeing every day even if there is no play in that day. To help you see the pattern, use the vice grip icon on the lower toolbar. This option will hide blank rows giving you a better overall perspective. Be sure to pay attention to the far left side of the display where the days of the week are listed. You may even wish to combine this with the Map Weeks option to show you even more of the projected rotation for the category.

New From the MM Blog
Handling Backups / Restoring Backups

by Marianne Burkett - I just got off the phone with a client who consults several stations. Each week the station sends him a backup zip file to restore and view. It’s not imperative, but keeping the filename the same all the time makes this whole process much easier. If the backup file is the same name as the last backup file and is in the same location as your previous backup, what you do is open the database and go to Tools/Restore. The issue with changing the name of the file all the time is that there is no “previous” backup by the same name, so restoring like this, is not going to work.

When someone sends you a new backup zip, you can ALSO double click on the zip and EXTRACT the database into the data folder. Download the zip from your email or dropbox and double-click on the Zip to open. See the EXTRACT ALL button? Go there...

Don't Duplicate Your Cart Numbers

by Jerry Butler - Programmers will often move an outdated liner or song out of rotation to a resting or hold category, but leave it in the database. Later they use that number again even though the original audio element is still in the database. Using the same automation number for multiple audio elements can cause issues including the wrong song airing or your history not showing up correctly for what you believe you had scheduled. When this happens, the first thing I check is to make sure there are not multiple items in the database with the same automation number. This is where the issue often begins. To help make sure you don’t run into this issue in MusicMaster, you can tell MusicMaster that you want the automation number field to be a unique value.

Mike “O.D.” O’Donnell

Operations Manager - Entercom Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA

O.D. shares: "I just celebrated my 30th year in the industry and I still wake up each day appreciating that I got to live my dream…Radio. I discovered the radio when I was about 12 years old as a kid in Southeastern Massachusetts. I grew up listening to Providence and Boston radio. Kiss 108 in Boston had just come on the air. I also enjoyed the legendary 92 PRO-FM in Providence. All of the personalities on those stations were bigger than life. I was like, 'Wow, that's a really cool gig. I would like to be able to do that.'

"I got my first full-time gig programming at WRZE in Cape Cod, MA. I then spent 6 years at WERZ in Portsmouth, NH. Later, I was picked up by Entercom as the PD of the legendary 98.5 KRZ in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA. I soon was overseeing the three music stations in the market including a CHR, Country, and Classic Hits. I am coming up on my 11th year with Entercom.

"About 3 years ago, we decided to move to MusicMaster and I was soon hooked. The database setup was easily done and the rule structure is limitless for scheduling goals. After running some logs and learning to ride the new bike, I really enjoyed how the logs were laying in for us. The flow looked better and clumping was minimized. A few key features that I personally love are the History Window, Optimum Goal Scheduling, and the Auto-Reconcile feature. The History Window makes it so easy to find the right song when you dive into the category, providing an excellent customizable visual. I can work so much faster using visual graphs rather than the rule window. As far as the Optimum Goal Scheduling feature in the Rule Tree, there is no doubt that this feature allows the Auto Scheduler to be more intuitive for my style of scheduling.

"Finally, I would like to give (my MusicMaster Scheduling Consultant) Paul Ziino a shout out. He has been a huge resource for me and my team whenever we have questions. It is also a bonus to have one dedicated rep rather than not knowing who you are going to get in the call center with other services.

"I haven’t found anything that MusicMaster can’t do for our stations here in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA. I would also recommend it to anybody striving to take their music logs to a new level of excellence."

Ryan Young

CFO/Controller - Dallas, TX

Ryan joined the MusicMaster team as CFO/Controller in August of 2015. Of his time at MusicMaster so far, Ryan comments, "I enjoy the people the most, whether customers or employees. The opportunity I have to work and meet with people all over the world is amazing, as well as the fact that (President) Joe Knapp encourages creativity and taking ownership of your position at the company. That experience makes me feel like I'm a valuable part of the whole team."

Having earned a Bachelors of Science in Finance with an emphasis in Accounting from Oklahoma City University, Ryan began his financial career working for Budweiser as their only Business Analyst for all of Oklahoma while furthering his graduate education. After earning his MBA in Organizational Development and Leadership from Oklahoma Christian University, he ended up in the world of Sanitation for over 10 years as a Financial Controller for Oklahoma and Texas. Prior to joining MusicMaster, Ryan had been working as the CFO/Controller for a Payday Loan Company based out of Dallas.

Ryan shares, "With every company I worked for, I had the opportunity to be very hands-on with the operational side of the business as well as the accounting side. This allowed me to become well rounded, and think in terms of the entire company and not just the numbers that were in front of me. It was so rewarding getting to work with everyone in the company and know I was helping grow this business so each person could better themselves and their families."

Outside of work, Ryan enjoys many diverse hobbies and interests. He shares, "Growing up I started designing houses at 8 years old and actually began college studying to be an architect. I have a deep appreciation for architecture in all senses." Ryan also grew up playing baseball and football and until recently, played softball in a local Dallas league. He also spends a lot of time out on the lake, skiing, wakeboarding and "just being out on the water." Fortunately, being as he works at MusicMaster, Ryan also calls himself a "huge music fan - not just for the sound, but the talent that goes into writing songs, and how so many people can relate to them."

Ryan's best advice to the MusicMaster community is: "Never stop learning and listening. We never know when and where we are going to pick up knowledge that is going to make a positive impact on our lives."
